Sunday 7/31

I found a half dozen species of shorebirds at Etter bottoms in Goodhue County,
including at least three Buff-breasted Sandpipers. This was in flooded fields
just into Goodhue County on the road (CR18) to Treasure Island Casino. A scope
is needed. Further along on my journey home, I found a family of Pied-billed
Grebes that include six in juvenile plumage.

At home it has been mostly quiet. The Barred Owl is begging around my yard.
My yard is alive with jumping amphibians, including Leopard Frogs, Chorus
Frogs, and American Toads. This is interesting. I had been overwhlmed by the
songs of treefrogs and toads, but had heard few, if any of the other frogs. It
might be that they called earlier in the season, bufore we started opening the
windows.

Today I peeled a Giant Swallowtail of my grill. They were common last year,
but this is the first this year. I also found a female Gypsy Moth along the
West River Road in Minneapolis.
