Hi MOU, My name is Ben Cushing and I’m a field organizer with Audubon Minnesota working in Duluth to protect our clean water from destructive sulfide mining. My job is to protect our clean water and natural heritage in northern Minnesota by activating Audubon members and engaging community members to block proposed sulfide mines in the St. Louis River watershed.
On January 16th, there will be a public hearing in Duluth to gather input from local residents. This is the first of three hearings across the state and the best way for concerned citizens to have their voice heard, so it’s critical that we have a strong turn-out. Can you please forward the announcement below to your networks? As we all know, northeast Minnesota is a local, regional and national wilderness treasure. The St. Louis River is a unique part of Minnesota’s natural heritage and the headwaters of the Great Lakes. But right now, mining companies like PolyMet want to build new and toxic sulfide mines that would create extreme water pollution that could last for the next 500 years and leave billions of dollars of cleanup costs for Minnesota taxpayers. If we can mobilize enough public support, we can make sure these mines aren’t approved and that our pristine waters are protected. The hearing in Duluth on the 16th is the first and one of the most critical steps to showing the broad public support for clean water protection in Minnesota. I’ve included the email announcement about this meeting below; can you forward it along to your list and anyone else you think might be interested? We would also love to have representation from important organizations in the area like Minnesota Ornithologists' Union at the hearing. Can you, or a representative from your organization, make the hearing? You can RSVP here! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, and let me know if you can forward the announcement. Thank you so much for spreading the word, MOU, and I hope to see you on the 16th!
