While watching the 6:00 news this evening, an unusual bird caught my attention above the water feature in my back yard. Although I only saw it for about 2 seconds with unaided eye, it looked like a male black-throated blue warbler. I scrambled into the next room to grab my binoculars and returned, hoping the bird hadn't vanished. To my good fortune, it reappeared and confirmed my initial ID. To make the encounter even sweeter, it then flew to and landed on the deck railing about 6 feet in front of me and hunted along the railing. It was the only warbler I saw in the yard all day. How does it go, "quality, not quantity." This brings my yard warbler list to 29 species, with the top 3 unexpected being today's beauty, prothonotary, and worm eating. Been a slow, uneventful fall bird migration here in Kandiyohi county, but this guy today was such a treat, I had to share. After 21 years of yard listing there are still new treasures to find.
