Microsoft, which also distributes CA root certs inside its browser (and accepts CA-signed certs) charges each CA for the privilege.
They do not.
That could only happen by way of them receiving hidden fees from WebTrust, which could rise quite a scandal.
But I agree with the rest of what you say, especially that the lock icon is lacking by having only a binary state.
