Ah, I was under the impression the price was quite high, such as half a mil. Do they not charge any of the CAs?

That could only happen by way of them receiving hidden fees from WebTrust, which could rise quite a scandal.
But I agree with the rest of what you say, especially that the lock icon is lacking by having only a binary state.
