Ignoring the main interface, how hard/easy would it be to do something like this as a plug-in instead?

I guess that's what TrustBar does. Personally,
I think that is non-optimal, I don't like the idea
of plugins fiddling around with the keys and
the various relationship structures. It raises
hard questions about what happens when I
write my new plugin to rewrite your relationships
database in my favour.

Certainly, using the plugins to experiment
with different ways of handling the UI question
is a good idea. There is a plugin to do the
fingerprint thing, called SSLBar from memory,
and there are other plugins to also deal with
phishing in other novel ways: spoofstick (sp?)
does something simple, whereas the one by
Netcraft hooks back into its centralised DB.

So I would envisage a period of plugin
experimentation after which, some of the
best ideas get sucked into the core apps.

Just my thoughts...
