I can't speak for Netscape. You should ask Netscape that question.
Perhaps it is to make it hard to reach for people not using Netscape
Communicator -- but your guess is as good as mine.

As you say, Secure Password Authentication is not the same thing as SSL.
I don't know whether Gravity supports SSL or not.
If not, then STunnel http://www.stunnel.org/ may be able to provide
the SSL encryption for Gravity.
