I ran into this as well.  Conversation with Netscape technical support
didn't solve the problem, because the only thing that I recall them
suggesting that worked (temporarily) was to delete the summary files,
as you have already done.  It's a pain in the ass.  What I do now is
open a folder that has the problem and move one of the messages
therein to another folder, called TEMP.  Then I type Alt-F D to do a
Compress Folders operation.  Netscape does the compress, rebuilds the
summary file, and all is well until the next session or in some
instances, if the folder has many entries, until a bunch of messages
are deleted from the folder.  At that point, the remaining entries are
unopenable/unreadable, and the folder must be rebuilt.
    I would hope that Netscape would fix this.  I have not played
around with the automatic compression feature (under Preferences |
Advanced | Disk Space) much, but perhaps there's a solution there.
