Last I heard (0.7), once you manually check messages, it 
automatically checks from then on.  I'm just downloading 0.8 
now.

I've yet to download a version of Mozilla that this feature works.
I've tried importing my profile from NS 4.76 and creating a new one.
It will not check for mail on startup or automatically every "X"
minutes no matter what I do. 

Just for the record sake - this is not an occurence that everyone experiences.  I have downloaded a nightly every week.  I'm using WinME and I have found that when the preference for email accounts are set properly, that the mail/news client check every 10 minutes (my setting) correctly on my system.  When new mail arrives, I am notified by a audio alert.
