But a key problem there, is that for all eternity Mozilla WILL BE inexorably
linked to Netscape, even if Netscape were to fold, the building to crumble,
and the domain name go to a porn site. Everyone knows Mozilla was an escape
pod fired off from the Netscape Mothership, and that Netscape has been the
major contributor to Mozilla for it's first three years of life. When Ma
Bell was broken up, we all knew Bell Atlantic was not the same as Bell
South, or Pacific Bell, yet they all used that bell-in-a-circle logo. The
best thing to do is to keep the identity of Mozilla whole, and keep
reiterating the separation. Like I said, the average user to day doesn't
know about the green lizard mascot for Netscape, and those who do,
understand the difference. The lizard isn't the problem. Making him red
isn't the answer.
That said, I wonder if it's Mozilla's color, or his cute design that endears
him to us. As a compromise, I'd vote to take the classic green Mozilla,
paint him red, and use that. How about it? He might object in the short
term, but I bet he'd like it better than being out of work. ;)
