Not Internet, but on your PC (as someone already explained). It is 
basically the same thing that allows download managers (GetRight, 
Gozilla, etc.). These programs need a way to learn what link you are 
opening, to be able to take it over in case it is one of the file 
categories you've chosen to download with the download managers (usually 
.exe, .zip, .rar, etc.).

Mozilla had no such "textfield" (simply a text resource readable by 
other programs on your compuyter, a way od inter-application 
communication) and Media Matrix (MM for brevity)wanted one for its 
software to be able to work with Mozilla.

Actually doing this for MM and not GetRight is a little strange (I would 
like Mozilla to be able to woek with GetRight, but I do not care about a 
Media Matrix, whatever that is). But this does not mean anyone can read 
your URLs, unless you've installed the MM sofware (wittingly or just 
duped by the promise of some rewards and bonuses).
