Well, the situation is more complex and pathetic than that. Mozilla is
unable to parse URLs properly. This defect, in combination with the
ability to access "non-standard" ports, could allow a malformed URL to
be a real security risk.
So instead of simply fixing the URL parsing and being done with it, the
Mozilla Politburo in their infinite wisdom, and behind the closed doors
of AOL HQ, decide to block access to ports which are otherwise
completely valid to access in the manner you describe.

There is, but I don't remember it either. That's not a real problem
though, because to add insult to injury, THEY'RE ADDING A UI TO IT.
Something to the effect of a "Compensate for Mozilla's defective URL
parser by blocking 'nonstandard' ports" checkbox. Can you imagine?
