What helper apps are you looking for?  All the important ones work fine 
here, and for the ones that don't, it's likely because their plugin 
isn't very good.  WMP Plugin isn't great, but I rarely watch streaming 
video anyhow.

Helper apps are hardly so devastatingly important that you shouldn't use 
a product.  But, you won't switch to IE, silver lining in every cloud I 
suppose :)
