What his is probably writing about is common plugins such as Quicktime
which is capable of viewing or listening to or watching about 45
different mime types.
Yet when you install Communicator then install a Plugin when you go to :
Edit > preferences > Navigator > Applications Communicator will
automatically list the various mime types in the Applications window.
You may have to go to applications and choose which plugin you decide to use.
IN netscape6 and Mozilla This doesn't happen. You have to know all the
different mime types and fill in the information manually. Where the
information to go by to set it all.
I've just downloaded and got to work a nightly from about a week ago.
Previous versions you could fill in this information, but it would not
stick even in the amount of time it took to click okay.
Plugins have been broken in Moz and N6 because they do not use
liveConnect (I believe is correct) technology of which 99.5% all current
plugins use. It questionable whether many of the plugin developers will
switch as it takes coding time to do and they have to pay the coders
money. many were written as freeware.
Netscape has given the code to WC3 committe, but they are undecided
whether to implement it.
There is a Netscape Newsgroup I frequent, That Moz or N6 is unsuable on
as many of the sounds and images can not be heard or seen simply because
plugins can not be set. Since Moz and N6 are supposed to be standards
compatible its unlikely that many plugins will ever work. even such as
Quicktime and PDF.
