I too would be happy see free tools used on Windows. However, Visual C++ 
is not THAT expensive: I saw the Standard version sell for $50 with 
mail-in rebate. And Visual C++ has probably the best debugger currently 
available for the Mozilla project - I would be very unhappy if you take 
that away from me!

Also, you can download nmake for free from Microsoft. You could 
experiment with other compilers besides other make systems as well...
