As I said I need more disk space to do that, more than three times the
size of the mail folder apparently...

I just dropped the contents of a _copy_ of the communicator mail folder
in a new folder in the the local files. What happened was that each
subfolder was converted when it was selected in Netscape Mail  & News.
This took some time for larger folders. It looked like the folder was
receiving mail, what happened was a msf file was created next to the
snm file. I gues I can simply trash the snm files now. I have not seen
any problems so far.
