So I do a file search on all of my hard drives for NPOJI610.DLL. After installing the JRE, however, that file doesn't happen to exist anywhere. There is a "NPOJI600.dll" file however, but doing a search on the filename from the release notes obviously doesn't reveal that. Copying this to my plugins directory has the same effect as the prefs.js change that the other response mentioned, and has the same down side of taking at least 10X longer to load Java applets as Netscape 4.7 does. :-( Still, it's a solution, and I appreciate the help.
