A vocal set of people on this newsgroup don't agree. There are many people who do agree, but because it's enabled, they don't feel compelled to spend a lot of time arguing about it in this newsgroup thread. :)
In the end, usability testing will indicate whether or not the end user likes the feature, i.e., has his/her browsing experience enhanced by the feature. If favicon.ico provides a way of enhancing that experience right now (as opposed to depending on a market share and <link> evangelism that may or may not materialize) why not pursue it?
