What I did, first with NS 4.x then with 0.9.4, was to install NS/Mozilla
on the clean system, create a profile with the old name and the copy in
that profile dir the entire contents of the directory I backed up before
  formatting the system.

It has always worked like a charm but since there was a lot of talk
about "installing with a clean profile dir" lately I was wondering
wheter there were some advantages in doing it.
