First off, these groups cover the Mozilla open-source project, rather
than products of Netscape. Discussion of Netscape products should be
directed to the appropriate Netscape groups :

Now, on to what you actually asked:

That's Netscape 6.0 alright.

Here's where it gets a bit complicated :)

The mozilla project (upon which netscape 6 is based) has not yet
finished version 1.0 of its code (current ETA is summer 2001). The
latest major release (less than a week ago) was version 0.7 (which
should be regarded as beta, see http://www.mozilla.org/releases/)

Netscape 6 is based on an earlier version of the Mozilla codebase.
Many people are of the opinion that Netscape 6 is not finished, but,
officially, it's release code.

There has been much discussion on the wisdom of Netscape releasing
N6.0 when they did.

The mozilla project has advanced considerably since the point at which
Netscape 6.0 separated off. Duke was referring to this progress, and
wondering why there hasn't been a Netscape 6.01 (or whatever) yet,
reflecting this progress.

I have a hunch that there will be such a release, maybe quote soon
(WARNING : Take with a tonne of salt. I know nothing. I'm guessing.)

> What's the best of the previous versions?

Of Netscape? Your mileage will vary considerably. There were no
releases between 4.76 and 6.0, AFAIK. The most _stable_ I remember
would have been 4.6(something), probably 4.61. Whether that's the
"best" is probably up to you.

> I was using 4.7, but it wasn't *terribly* stable.

I remember 4.70. You're being polite, aren't you?
