No. The sidebar is a tool to help you browse the Web. The only window
where a sidebar would possibly be useful, enough to be worth the screen
real estate it takes up, is a Navigator window.

No, they should scroll (and be selectable) along with the rest of the
message, like in 4.x. This waste of screen real estate alone is one of
the biggest usability problems in the Mozilla mailer -- something
probably not noticed by programmers with large monitors.
