Sure, it works perfectly and uses less than 400kb RAM (w/ virt. mem). It 
however depends on the NS4 preferences you specified (which is fine for 
me as I have the same IMAP account for NS4 and Moz)
Don't know how much work it would need to adapt it to be a stand-alone 
solution.

Otherwise there are tons of free mail checkers out there. You might want 
to add some links to them in the bookmarks or some FAQ page. The only 
reason I use the NS one is that only few do IMAP and none uses SSL.
