Regarding the memory savings:

I did an unofficial test, and remember that there are only two columns
and no images. I loaded a 3500 message folder and started scrolling
with the down arrow about halfway through my folder. In the old tree
widget it added 30MB of memory in my Windows Task Manager. In the new
outliner it added approximately 4K and that 4K only got added when I
first clicked on the down arrow. Just scrolling added nothing!
