Good question. I suppose the definition has warped a bit over time:
http://www.mozilla.org/newlayout/gecko.html
... this basically says that Gecko is Netscape marketings name for XPFE
and NGLayout, and that mozilla.org is not Netscape so would not be using
the name Gecko. This page is dated December 12 1998.
On the main nglayout page: http://www.mozilla.org/newlayout/ that links
to the above URL, you see the word Gecko splattered about where NGlayout
used to be.
Then you have people who consider the layout engine, the network library
(necko) and all the other components you need to make an embedded
browser as being Gecko.
I'll stick to the meaning that Gecko is the thing formerly known as
NGlayout.
