But that would need a permanent connection to the internet, which many
users will not want (e.g. if they pay per minute, or for security reasons).

What I meant was the following:

With Netscape 4.x, you could use your mail directory for both OS versions.
When for Windows, your mails were in D:\Profile_name\mail, you could just
enter the path to that directory (whatever,
/disks/partition_2/Profile_name/mail) as mail directory in the Linux
verison of Netscape, and you would see the same mails on both operation
systems (when using Netscape Messenger of course).

The only problem were the ".snm"-files, which had a different format (I
believe even a different file name) under Windows / Linux. So when using
the Linux version, Netscape tried to read mails from these "folders", which
of course did not work. Of course you could just delete the .snm files and
get on with it, but it was sort of annoying.

The only thing that should be changed is to use the same format for these
files on both systems. Would be great, since many users work with both
Windows and Linux, and being able to access your mail folders from both
systems would be a nice thing.

See you,
   Henning
