You must be using it in a different way from me. Even in a newsgroup 
with moderately heavy traffic (c.o.l.misc), when I open the group, there 
are 150 or so messages, and far fewer threads displayed. When I mark all 
read, the exact same number of threads remain displayed in exactly the 
same form, except that now the are not highlighted. So I still only have 
50 or so to sort through. I admit to being puzzled how you use it that 
would cause the problem you are describing. Are you for some reason not 
using "View->Messages->Threads with Unread"?

And frankly, nothing in any newsgroup that I read is so profound that I 
don't want to miss it :-)
