I consider it a terrible thing if I can't control how my
messages appear. And I find it extremely annoying, that
there is actually a setting, that allows you to set your
characters for plain text to 60 characters (or whatever you
choose) just like there was in versions 4.7x, but that it
only applies to your composition window, and not your actual
post.

That wasn't broken, 6.1 is with regard to being able to
format your messages.

Neither am I, and either way, it shouldn't be something I
have to dig into a prefs.js file to change.

I doubt it was overlooked. They took away the feature which
the caret applied to, so they obviously would take away the
caret as well, unless they wanted to annoy people to even
greater extremes.
