I guess it depends on the level of "munging".  If the real address is 
unconstructable from the information given, then obviously private replies 
can't be given and that can be a pain.  But simple (obvious) methods can 
also be effective and prevent spam without making private replies 
impossible for a non-bot.

Mail filters only work to a degree.  Address munging is a whole lot more 
effective.

Really?  Munging addresses seems widely accepted to me.  Or this out of
