Unfortunately it seems to be more complicated. In the meantime I've a
fourth machine, and on this one (and *only* this) it works. I already
tried clean profiles on all machines, it's definitely not profile
related. I can even copy profiles from a non-working machine to the
working one, and it'll work (and vice-versa). All machines are running
W2K SP2 and the same mozilla build (0.9.7 milestone). All machines
contain exactly the same files in the plugins directory. All machines
show exactly the same results for "about: plugins". I'm unable to find a
difference between the one working machine and the three that don't. 
Given the amount of similar reports, it seems to me as if there's some
quirk in the last Mozilla milestone that often, but not always stops
plugins from working.
