Settings in Edit-Preferences->Appearance->Fonts _do_ affect the display 
of plain text messages. I have changed my monospace font size there and 
it changed the view of news messages. As you can see, settings in 
Edit-Preferences->Appearance->Fonts are separate for each encoding. I've 
changed the size to 14px only for my native encoding (Central European), 
so I still see most of the posts on this group in 12px small font. Some 
posts are displayed with bigger fonts - for example those with chinese 
encoding :-) But both messages mentioned by Klaus Meyer are 'us-ascii', 
so I see no difference between them (they're both small)...

(BTW, changing 12 to 13px had no effect, but I heard that Moz has some 
problems with Unix fonts. 14px made the change).

I think the above setting changed the font size in Composer too, but I 
can't be sure.
