Ahem! I was a bit quick off the draw there. That pref is for the 
browser, although I /think/ it applies to HTML mail/news as well, but 
you mentioned plain text.

What are your settings in Edit-Preferences->Appearance->Fonts and 
Edit-Preferences->Mail & Newsgroups->Message Display "Use this font when 
displaying plain text messages"?

There was a bug (that disappeared without being fixed!) whereby the 
"Allow documents to use other fonts" checkbox in 
Edit-Preferences->Appearance->Fonts affected the font used in Mail/News 
regardless of the fixed/variable width radio buttons on the Message 
Display page.
