No, that's not it, /etc/hosts just has the entry for the local machine,
everything else is resolved by DNS.

$ nslookup gives
Name:    ripley.aoltw.net
Address:  204.29.187.156
Aliases:  secnews.netscape.com, secnews.aoltw.net

Seems to be correct?!
