You seem from your tone to be against the whole icon thing... but it's not only a de facto standard - it's a great idea... The text field is a space-waster, especially since many of my messages are "new" or "read", which is redundant given the bold/nonbold feedback on that information AS WELL AS the little green thing. Proposed icons: Message with a little curvy arrow thing for replied Message with a forward arrow (pointing right) for forwarded Some highlight-colored message icon for "new" - although I think the bold subject headers are enough, at least for me.
