Hi Brian,
Yes, thanks for your help, I do appreciate it. :-)
I understood you the first time. I know I haven't
mucked things up by editing the prefs.js file because
the same thing happens with a virgin profile.

The %S problem occured once early on when there were
huge numbers of SMTP servers in my prefs.js. But I
fixed that.

The orgininal and main problem is that I can't send
mails. I get the barbers pole dialog, and it just
sits there forever, the modem lights are flashing
indicating something is going on, but that's it. In
the end I have to cancel it.

I have been through the email-setup wizard many times
with a virgin profile and always I get the same
problem. Yet, outlook works fine with exactly the
same settings.

I wish I could see what was actually going on underneath,
then I would have something to go on!

Any more ideas?

Thanks.
Mark.
