I just get a dialog box saying sending.... but nothing

the %S suggests it cannot read the name of the server?
Mark,

I just worked through the exact same problem. For some reason, I had 3-4 instances of my SMTP server listed under the [Advanced] setting in the SMTP server configuration. In addition to this there were some blank (?) entries. I've no idea what created the multiple instances, or blank entries.

I tried deleting all of the extraneous entries while ensuring the remaining server was set to default. After this, I began to see the "cannot find server %s ..." error. I double checked all of my account to ensure they were pointing at the right server (I tried setting to both the default, and the specific server), with no luck. I tried adding another instance of the same server, and deleting the former, again with no luck.

After this I had a look at the prefs file, and noticed that things looked pretty messed up. I sorted things out as best I could, but wasn't able to get it working this way either.

Finally, I decided to add a new instance of my SMTP server, but this time using the numeric IP address. For some reason, this worked.

Overall, the SMTP configuration in my version appear to be rather buggy.

FYI, I'm using Mozilla 1.2a Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.2a) Gecko/20020910. Perhaps it's time again to grab a newer version.
