Yes.
The default on Apache is to serve things up as MIME type text, right? Is this one of the situations where Moz detects that it's not really text and therefore kicks it back to the user to decide?
Sounds like it.
Any way for an extension to get involved in that process and handle .z5 files served as text that aren't really text?
Not a clean one (i.e. one that would not break if another extension were also trying to handle them)....
Note that once we get "handle internally" as an option on that dialog that comes up, things will probably just work for you.
