So I guess the question is just how, via javascript, to register 'firefox.exe' as the helper application for .z5... Is that possible to do?
There's no nice & easy way :-/ The helper app dialog does it by opening the pref panel and having it close immediately (sic) - http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/embedding/components/ui/helperAppDlg/nsHelperAppDlg.js#566
And that dialog does it by using RDF APIs directly. (the function around http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/xpfe/components/prefwindow/resources/content/pref-applications-edit.xul#96)
