You may have seen my recent posting here describing the very same problem, and there have been others as well. Mike Kaply has responded saying:
*****************Kaply's response begins***************** Does the Java applet do networking itself? Like requesting stuff over the network? The main difference between Java in Mozilla and Java in 4.61 is that Java in 4.61 uses Netscape to route all network requests, whereas the Java plugin uses Java's network layer. That might be causing a difference. That's the only thing that comes to mind. You might try modifying the site to use the EMBED tag instead of the applet tag and see if you get the slow down on 4.61 using the Java 1.3 plugin. That would narrow down whether it was a Mozilla or Java problem. Mike *****************************ends***************************** I didn't write the applet in question, and I have written to its developer, who will no doubt get back to me after the holiday season. so I can't yet answer his question. What does seem to be the case is that Mozilla, getting network services in a way different from Netscape, is not as useful as Netscape when applets are involved. Mozilla's way may well be philosophically justifiable and even superior, but the acid test is how it works in the real world. By that test, it is a flop (I use the word advisedly). One would feel better about it if the blame could be laid directly at the door of Mozilla, because it is now only in beta and improvement could be expected. But if it is true that Java13 is screwing up, then it would seem that the Mozilla team was anyway rash in making a serous change without checking out whether the new way of doing Java business actually works. I gave Mike the address of the applet that was giving me trouble. Perhaps you should do the same, so that his team might just possibly be able to find a workaround. To the matter, however, I have found that sometimes the applet does come up if I wait long enough. But for the time being, I have to keep Netscape around, and advise users of my Website to access it with browsers other than Mozilla.
