hi, this is an old but nevertheless somewhat annoying "feature". mozilla loses its mail/new entries in the tasks menu and the associated icons down left in the status bar too. the only way to get mail/news running is to to start mail explicitly (and do not close it). OK, you can delete component.reg, some chrome files or whateever else maybe that solves the problem, mostly it doesn't. This should be fixed.
