I now have tried every combination I can think of, forward slashes too.
I've even pointed to different wave files , including OS/2 installed ones.

We know that the Browser will play the wave files because can do a file open
and it'll play.
....here's my latest change. (single forward slashes) double // made no 
difference.

user_pref("system.sound._moz_mailbeep", 
"file:///C:/MMOS2/SOUNDS/newmail.wav");

....still only hear the os/2 warning sound, like it's an invalid function.

I'm almost convinced that it's something else within the IBM Web Browser.
Keep the ideas and suggestions coming.
There's got to be an answer to this mystery.
