I'm not sure what really helped in the end... I searched for ..\Mozilla 1.1\bin\chrome\chatzilla.jar and unzipped it (*.jar is just a zip file after all). After doing so, I restarted Mozilla/2 1.1 to have a look at the bug again - and it had vanished. Sounds as strange to me as the bug itself.
