Thanks to the person who suggested changing the identification of the browser (whose post has inexplicably disappeared from my news window).
I downloaded the software and intalled it and it seems to work fine, but the bank site behaviour is unchanged. I tried identifying as Netscape 4.78, and as IE 5 - no go with either. Good try though!
