BTW, check out some late 70's/early 80's reords of, say, Vangelis (eg.
Spiral, Blade Runner OST) or Tangerine Dream (eg. Force Majeure, Le
Parc) and you can hear the roots of trance.. Tangerine Dream's Force
Majeure sounds at places just lake Hallucinogen or Juno Reactor, only
without the drums (and better), Vangelis is closer to club trance (but
usually a lot better).
Anyway, I don't really see the point of dissin everything that happens
to be popular or kewl or 3l33t or trendy or on the top 40, like Dolce &
Gabbana or trance or suomiriimi or whatever. Sounds just like kids
whining because they in secret also would like to be hip and pop and
trendy but aren't. =)
I can openly admit that I like some trance tunes (mostly from the 92-94
era but some contemporary stuff too) and some of the Finnish rap stuff
(and yes, there are other Finnish rappers that Fintelligens,
Seremoniamestari and Petri Nygrd, which all do have their moments, but
check out Flegmaatikot, Ply, Juhani Saksiksi, Set Koponen (not
related) & Kehkettu, ..) and that I do have a Dolce & Gabbana track
jacket.. =) And I even kinda like the new Madonna tune, tho it's no drop
dead masterpiece.

Phh.. Okay, you probably didn't _really_ mean that the skin color of
the composers/musicians would make a difference, but I just hate that
shit. "Only black people can make groovy music", "true art only rises
from poverty and suffering" etc. etc. Shit, no. I can second the
emotion, that the original (pre-76 or so) disco movement was entirely a
different thing from what came after, and in many ways better, but lots
of black folks from Philly did lots of shit too, and many of the good
ones are done by white or latin musicians or even <gasp> a mix of people
of different "races". Many of the early disco slammers played at the
Loft and such places were European, BTW. And the concept of a
discotheque is originally from France.
And of the European stuff, I woudn't overlook Giorgio Moroder and lots
of other, less-known cats, who really gave the scene a nice push.
Anyway, the birth of hip hop and especially electro was partially due to
European influences, some more or less "native" European (Kraftwerk
etc.), some recycled American influences (many European disco acts
etc.).
BTW just bought the Telex album "Looking for Saint Tropez" from the 3
records for 10 marks bargain bin. That's some nice European
disco/electro/pop to me.
> maybe yes, but imho 80's disco has little to do with electro. maybe it
Well, I think the modern electro has more to do with experimental noise
than original 80's electro that I love, but then again, that's just
another matter of personal opinion, I suppose.

Well, I think it is very much about rapping, and dirty lyrics. Just
think of the first widely popular Miami bass act 2 Live Crew (who gave
name to the whole scene because they were from Miami, unlike most of the
scene which is centered around the Norhern parts of Florida).
