I hear a pop on Windows 98 anytime I use Windows Media to play any sound. It
seems to leave the DAC at the last value in the last thing it played. Lots of
music seems to have an average DC value that is not zero (as if there was a
ground shift in the recording equipment and they really did not want to put
any transformers in the recording path). Shifting from one song to another
often is accompanied by a significant pop. It also could be that there is a
little bit of junk in the buffer in Windows 98 that is getting flushed out
when Windows Media starts playing.

In looking at the spectrum and signal values in the wave files, I have noticed
that the pop is not in the recording. It therefore must be in the player.

Another problem I have noticed in the CD ripping process is that the time
values in the directory of the CD are often not accurate. I have tried
different rippers and have written my own ripper and they all have identical
problems in picking up the beginning of a song when asked to start at the
beginning of a track on some CD's. I find that I have to modify the beginning
of the song by backtracking or going forward in time (or else clip the
beginning with a WAV editor). You have to do this before encoding the wav
into MP3.
