Perhaps some of them could just type
  make "GTK=" "GTKLIBS="

This works with GNU make at least.

For those millions who won't bother to pass arguments to the make command,
one could modify the Makefile (not e.g. the code itself).
Just comment out the GTK and GTKLIBS assignments as default.
Those who want the analyzer in the lame binary will have to remove the
comment characters. I guess, there are more convenient ways to accomplish
configuration ...
