mid/side stereo is a trick to get higher quality for a wide class
of signals where the L and R channels are very similar. But there
are many cases where mid/side stereo does more harm than good.
LAME tries to detect when mid/side should and should not be used,
but the algorithm is not perfect.

At high bitrates, the possible benifits of mid/side stereo are small,
so using mid/side stereo is not worth the risk. At what bitrates
should we stop using m/s? Until someone does some detailed tests
and figure out the optimum setting, we'll just do what
FhG does: disable mid/side stereo at 160kbs and above.
