This discussion is rather a coincidence because the last few days I've been
playing with the compression system in Audiograbber under
Normalisation/Advanced. It is quite flexible. (eg.) An average volume can be
specified and a maximum compression allowed to obtain the average, providing
the original compact ratio is below a certain value.

An alternative is to use on-the-fly compression at playback. For those using
Microsnot Windblows, there is a very good plug-in available for Winamp called
Audiostocker which works quite effectively to keep the volume fairly constant.
The problem with realtime compression is that the volume on quiet passages can
noticeably be heard increasing as if someone is turning up the volume.

I would be interested in some advanced compression system, whether it be built
into LAME or external that can deal with the following situation.
I have come across songs that don't work too well with standard compression
techniques as found in Audiograbber. Songs that have say the first 2 minutes
at a low volume and the last 2 at high volume. Using Audiograbber's
compression at 100% sorts out the first 2 minutes but the last 2 are over
compressed with little dynamics. Now if someone could come up with a routine
to sort this out then you have my support.

Cheers,
Ross.
