The Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement of an antitrust case against the 
nation's five largest
music companies on Wednesday that the commission said should result in significant 
price cuts for compact
discs.

The settlement completed a two-year investigation of the companies that officials said 
had uncovered
illegal marketing agreements that the music companies had used to end a price war and 
inflate the prices of
compact discs. Agency officials estimated that consumers had been overcharged by about 
$500 million over
the past four years.
