As for this particular recording, it is a wide scale of complexity: sometimes
music, sometimes voice. That's why
I'd rather stick to a VBR preset, something like "--alt-preset standard -b96" or
maybe even "--alt-preset standard -b80". This "-b80" thing changes the minimal
bitrate. It is O.K. to do it and it doesn't mix up with any internal routines of
VBR. Minimal bitrate is only for safety purposes (VBR engine sometimes chooses
too low bitrate) and it's normally -b128 with --alt-presets, which will be too
high for voice.

I'm pretty damn sure someone was asking about the same BBC Lord Of The Rings
recording at hydrogenaudio.org, but I can't find the thread, so if you want to

For bitrates equal to 96 and less, Fraunhofer's mp3 still sounds better than
Lame.
