Well, that saves me some trouble in the debian/rules script
(which is a makefile) of discovering which architecture we are
trying to build the package on.

Oh, I refrained from using them because I read some people had
problems with this option (and its variants) and I then
decided to be conservative instead of using higher
optimizations.
Nice to know that CVS does the right thing. I'll enable these
options in the next revision of the debian files that I make
and report any problems that I have (I'll test the packages on
both Linux/x86 and Linux/ppc).
